The weather has been fairly wet in the last few days and as we write today’s Irish Angling Update there is a Rainfall Warning in operation for Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick.

Winner Enda Minogue
Enda Minogue wins Catch of the Week for 124lb bag of carp from Oaklands

Enda Minogue won the weekend’s competition at Oakland Fishery with a great bag of carp which weighed in at 124lb. This achievement also wins Enda Catch of the Week. At Inniscarra Reservoir, the Jackie Lennox Munster Open was won by Shane Dunne on 31.2kg despite south westerlies of 30 to 50mph. Coarse anglers will also be interested to read an interview with Zoltan Bodnar where he outlines some of his more successful tactics.

Pike anglers are trying to get into their stride but the unsettled weather has made things difficult, particularly on the bigger lakes. There are a few reports in nonetheless including an exciting account from Rob Love of a jack on fly that was hit by a bigger fish – all caught on video. Michael Flanagan was out with anglers on Ree, Ennell and the River Inny last week. Some good pike were caught, and some of the stories will be featured in the French angling magazine Brochet Sandre. At Esox Lodge on the Erne, the battle for the Golden Giraffe was won with an 82cm pike.

There is not much to report from the rainbow trout fisheries this week, but congratulations go to Julie Gerry who won the Knockaderry Cup at the weekend. The organisers report that good fishing was had by all despite some unfavourable conditions. A total of 95 fish were caught over the weekend, the largest measuring 66 cm.

The recent winds have made sea angling a difficult proposition in many areas. Along the east coast the churned up water has put off many anglers, but some sea fishing is available from charter boats. Cork Harbour has seen a few cod reported both from small boats inside the harbour and from the Monkstown wall and there were other reports of cod and whiting from east Cork and Waterford beaches.

Met Eireann tells us that the unsettled weather will continue and that it will turn much cooler in the early days of next week, with some frost at night.

Tight lines to all.
