Wicklow Boat Charters ’s skipper Kit Dunne reports on the arrival of Spurdog to some inshore marks recently.

After returning from the World Boat Angling Championships where Ireland took 4th place I was met with a few cancellations due to poor weather at home. I was keen to get after the Spurs having hooked one 2 weeks before but I had to wait until Friday the 24th October to give it a go. The SW wind was still there but I had a close enough mark in mind for the day, Albert, Romas and Niall joined me to target these members of the shark family.

We anchored in 35Metres with a hard enough tide and baited up big, mackerel and squid were presented on 4/0 hooks, if we didn’t hit a spur we might get a Huss or even a big late tope.

It wasn’t too long until Niall hooked into something definitely bigger than a Dog, he hauled up a beautiful Spurdog and I scrambled to get the net. First one was in the bag. I fished myself having seen the spur, in the hope of my second specimen this year.

Little time passed when Albert called for the net, another fine spurdog was landed, followed my one for myself and again one for Niall. Romas looked on wondering what was wrong with his bait, and after a short while, bang, he was into another, followed by more within the hour of slack water.
We had a good 2.5 hour session either side of slack water, landing nearly a dozen Spurdog and a Huss to 13lb, a great few hours, just a pity the run picked up so much. Roll on the next day and preferably Neap tide and good weather will allow us to the outside deeper marks.
