Daniel Brosnan (PRO) for Tralee Bay Sea Angling Club tells us that they are holding a Tag a Ray competition in memory of a fellow angler Liam O’Connor, he reports:
When I heard about Liam O’Connor and his tragic loss in a far off place, I was just gobsmacked… When I actually got to know the legend of the man, it was actually years after he had died, the only thing I knew about him was that he had set up the Tralee Bay Sea Angling website and I think he had contributed to our own website in some way…
I also heard of stories of tope and specimen ray being caught by him ‘from the shore’ in secret locations around the Bay…
When I realised that Liamo had actually documented his trip down under and his fishing exploits there, then the whole thing sounded to me, like a blockbuster film, something untrue that only fairy tales are made of, after his death his videos on youtube have actually been viewed close to 200,000 times and they keep on growing…
Liam O’Connor was a true angler, obsessed and addicted to what he loved, he wasn’t a big match angling man but it was specimens and big fish he loved to catch, this year Tralee Bay will host the Tag A Ray weekend again and we gonna base it around Liam, hopefully it will become an annual thing and certainly we will try and remember his name through what Liam adored, fishing…
Fishing means everything to me personally, it has been in and around my life since before I could walk, although I didn’t know Liam, I think that might be our connection, I can understand his devotion to it, we have Liams family be our side on this and I made it my business to have full permission from them on holding this event for Liam… More details to follow in the next week
