Steven Neely from Rookie Bass Angler Blog tells us of his battle among the undergrowth for an excellent days fishing,
We set off as usual for Co. Monaghan for a spot of pike fishing …… We tried a few usual spots and then decided to explore some new ones.
Surrounded by trees, bushes and reeds these were not easily accessed.
Trying to weave your way under trees to make a short cast up a long the margins seemed to be the only approach.
Not an easy way to fish and a lot of getting stuck in over hanging branches but it certainly paid off.
The fish were switched on and the sport was top class.

All the action came to soft plastic lures – Fiiiish Black Minnows, Flash Arrows and generic weed less shads.
As well as some pike we had a few bonus (tiny) perch. Despite their small size they were fin perfect and works of art.
At one stage I had 8 takes in a row from pike swirling in the shallows – Sadly it wasn’t to be ….. I had serious issues with setting the hooks, partly due to severe over excitement on my part.
It was great though to get out and get a breath of fresh air and some sunshine. It won’t be long now until the sea temperatures start to rise and the sport on the coast starts in earnest.
