Brian Stevens, Slaney River Trust, reports:

18/05/2014: This week shows how fickle salmon fishing can be. Wednesday was a real red letter day for the river with a great run of fish with sealiced fish being landed on beats from Enniscorthy to as far up as Tullow. The fish are clearly running hard when they come in.

On one beat 3 rods made contact with a total of 14 fish with six of them landed. On Friday not one fish was landed on that beat despite very good water and hardly a fish was seen.

Can I remind all anglers of the importance of catch and release technique – the fish should preferably be released without being taken out of the water or photographed and immediately returned – I had a report today of a fish being out of the water a number for minutes before being returned much the worse for its experience.

19/05/2014: I reported yesterday that in particular the middle of last week had produced great fishing. An SRT board member kindly did a ring round the river and it has confirmed the picture of a great week with fish spread throughout the system.

The attached report details some of the catches and lucky anglers from 11 Beats. In particular it was good to hear that Alex Wilding (aged 12), pictured here with his first salmon on the line, went to land it while fishing near Clonegal in a rain storm. Fishing is not just a sport for old men!

The report shows that you can meet fish throughout the system. An active angling presence on the river is the best protection for the fish stocks. If you witness any illegal activity, breaches of the fly only rule above Enniscorthy or the catch and release rules be sure to urgently contact IFI.
