EILEEN CARROLL MURPHY  from the Inland Fisheries Ireland Office in Macroom office reports on salmon fishing trends on many salmon fisheries in the Cork Kerry area.

FOR WEEK ENDED SUNDAY 22nd of June  2014

KILLARNEY LAKES AND LOUGH LEANE

6 salmon landed for the week, ranging in weight from 4 lb. to 7 lb., landed mostly by local anglers.

LAUNE SALMON AND TROUT ANGLERS’ ASSOCIATION WATERS AND BEAT 3

As of Monday 23rd June water fallen back to 1 foot 6 inches on the gauge at Johnston’s.

There were ten fish reported from the Laune for the week.  Fish of the week goes to Mike Crowley from Tralee who sportingly returned his first fish of the year a 14 pounder caught on the fly at the Rock Pool on Tuesday evening.  On Monday a Tralee angler landed another 14 pounder at Johnston’s on the worm.

The Laune like the rest of the country suffered from excessive sunshine during the week and especially at the weekend  which did not help the fishing.

There are four French anglers fishing Laune Anglers waters for the week.  It will be interesting to see what they have to report for their week.  One thing is for sure they will enjoy the company of our own members and enjoy the ambiance but will they meet fish?  Or will they hear about the Draft nets at Cromane and in the Laune reducing their chance of catching a fish and the chance that they will return to fish again in 2015?

Permits for Laune Anglers waters right now cost only €25 per day.

Beat 3:

Beat 3 needs a foot of water but the trout fishing conditions are ideal especially in the evenings.

Prospects: While anglers say that there are fish running the river, the fishing could be a lot better.  Even over the weekend when the draft nets were off, the fishing was not the greatest. I would say overall that the fishing was disappointing despite great water.

Anglers please note: A ‘One Day’ salmon permit for Beat 3 only costs €25

RIVER ILEN

4 fish landed for the week by club anglers, best 8 lb. by M O’ Donovan on worms.
