Lindsey Clarke reports from OWENEA FISHERY – Monday 28th to Sunday 3rd August 2014.
There were some great water conditions this week on the river due to the unsettled and wet weather. We had good water heights on each day of the week. The gauge average for the week was very good reading 0.30 metres. The fishery was busier with 58 visiting rods fishing for the week spread fairly evenly over the week. Given the good water levels there was a good catch of salmon for the week. On Monday, Anne McMenamin recorded a 3½lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 4. Otmar Butz caught and released a 6lb grilse on a fly from beat 7. Jim McLean recorded 3 grilse caught on a spinner from beat 8. These weighed 5, 4½ & 2lb with the smaller of these released. Michael Wilson registered a 5lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 5 and Dietrich Bonhorst accounted for a 4½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 8. On Tuesday, Carl Weathers recorded a 4½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 7. Alan Mooney logged a 4½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 8 and Billy Blair registered a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 8.
On Wednesday, Michael McLaughlin reported a 5½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 9. On Thursday, Bart McHugh recorded a 5½lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 8. Robert McCleary logged a 5lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 8 & Neil Gallagher registered a 5¼lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 9. On Friday, Michael McLaughlin recorded a 4½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 9 & Michael McCrory reported a grilse caught on a fly from beat 8. On Saturday, Fergal Mallon recorded two grilse of 5 & 3lb caught on a fly from beat 8 and James Mackel accounted for a grilse of 4lb caught on a spinner from beat 9. On Sunday, Dietrich Bonhorst reported a 7lb salmon caught on a fly from beat 3. Michael McCrory registered a 2lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 3. Raymond Crawford reported a 7lb salmon caught on a worm from beat 8. Billy Blair registered a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 8 and Gordon Young also accounted for a grilse caught on a spinner from beat 8.
