Lindsey Clarke reports from OWENEA FISHERY – Monday 7th to Sunday 13th July 2014.

There was a little more rain this week and thankfully this resulted in better water levels. The river was reading 0.12 metres on Monday but by Tuesday the river was reading 0.20m. Not a good flood but far better than the low summer levels of previous weeks. Thereafter the river fell again until another small flood reading 0.16m on Sunday. The gauge average for the week read 0.13 metres. A few rods fished this week and we recorded, at last, a few salmon caught. On Monday, Maurice Kennedy recorded an 8lb salmon caught on a spinner from beat 8.

On Tuesday, Maurice recorded another salmon caught. The fish weighed 7lb and was caught on a spinner from beat 7. Anthony Carr reported 2 grilse caught and released again. These weighed 3 & 4lb and were caught from beat 4 on a fly. Michael McLaughlin logged a 5lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 9. On Sunday, Anthony Carr recorded a further grilse of 5lb caught on a fly from beat 4. The forecast for the coming week is for unsettled weather and hopefully this will raise water levels once again.
