Ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on the salmon and sea trout fishing in the past week on Lough Currane:
04/09/14 There was some great Game fishing on Lough Currane in all departments so here are the results of the day. In the Salmon department Ms Jennifer Lane caught a fine 4lbs. Grilse on the troll, while fishing with her Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com Now we cut across to the North side of the Lake and the Sea Trout fly department. Marc’s Fishing Party from Belgium, and fishing in the hired out Boat department of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] caught 10 Sea Trout of which 2 were in the 3 lbs. class and a fine Sea Trout in the 5 ½ lbs class and 9 Sea Trout in total were released. Staying on the North side, Mr. James and Tom Merrit of the UK, caught 4 Sea Trout on the drift, ranging from Junior class up to 1 ½ lbs. While fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Now we head down the North shore, Mr. Chris Mcukeon fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught four Sea Trout ranging from junior class up to 4 lbs. Wind SE light and sunny and very warm.

05/09/14 Again the fly Anglers are having some great manipulation in the Sea Trout department, so lets get to the action, first in the striking zone, is the Italian connection, yes you have it, Mr. Enrico Fantasia of Dublin, caught 4 Sea Trout, ranging from juniors up to 2 lbs. and in the words of his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com don’t forget to mention that they were all returned. Staying at the Bungalow, Mr. James and Tom Merrite of the UK, fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 4 Sea Trout on the drift, ranging from Junior class up to 4 ½ lbs. Just for the record all their Sea Trout were all returned. Now we head down the North Shore, Dirk from Belgium caught 15 Sea Trout ranging from junior class up to 4 lbs. while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com Now to the hired out Boat Department of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] Marc’s Fishing party from Belgium caught a total of 20 Sea Trout ranging from Junior Class and there were a good few in the 3 lbs. to the 4 lbs class and of the 20 Sea Trout caught, 19 were returned. Now we head to the south side and the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. Dara Tracey, caught 2 Sea Trout both in the 1 ½ lbs. class. Wind west light, with reasonable cloud cover.
06/09/14 Straight to young angler of the day and that goes to Eva Lane, who caught her first ever Sea Trout and may it be the first of many. Staying with my Noble Sea Trout and the hired out boat department of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] Marc’s fishing party from Belgium, caught and released 10 Sea Trout ranging from junior class up to 2 ½ lbs. Also in good form in the C&R department, was Mark from Belgium, who caught 7 Sea Trout to his rod, the best weighing in at 2 lbs. while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com staying with the Sea trout, Mr. James and Tom Merrite of the UK, caught 2 trout, while fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Now we head up to the upper lakes and Lough Derriana, Mr. Dermot Deveroux and Mr. Mick Dunbar, caught 3 Sea trout on the drift, ranging from Junior class up to 3 lbs. Wind E light with good cloud cover.

07/09/14 Bright Sunshine was the order of the day and very little action in the morning, reason being there was no wind come afternoon there was a gentle breeze from the east, the only bit of action reported was from Marc’s fishing party from Belgium and fishing out of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] and in the words of Marc and I quote, 3 Sea Trout, Junior class. So ends our weeks fishing, and in the words of my satellite reporter it was too bright and as you can see by the photo there is no argument to that.

08/09/14 Straight to the back date department, yes you have it I failed miserably in my duties in my reporting on the upper lakes, anglers fishing with their Gillie MD, on Lough Derriana yesterday 7/9/14 caught a fine catch, with 7 Sea Trout ranging from Junior class up to 3 lbs. and topped that with 20 Brown Trout. Now back to the present, All my Noble fly anglers could do today was sit and wait, reason being the lake was like a milk pond, with clear blue skies and the sun raging down, need I say more. On that note, I must apologise for the lack of information, but as you can see my Noble Anglers failed miserably in all departments.
09/09/14 We start with flat calm conditions this morning but this didn’t deter Mr. Markus Kruse and his Gillie MD from putting their trolling rods out and it wasn’t long before they had a rod bender, but sadly my Noble Salmon had the last laugh, but the same couldn’t be said when they got their fly rods out for a bit of sport in the Sea Trout department, they met 8 Sea trout in total and caught 4, 2 juniors, 1 Sea Trout in the 2 lbs Class and finished their day off with a fine Sea Trout in the 4 lbs. Class. Staying with the Sea trout department Ms Wiebke Behnecke from Cologne, while fishing with her Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught her first ever Sea Trout weighing in at 1 ½ lbs. May it be the first of many. Wind flat calm this morning but come lunch time the wind came from the West, light with reasonable cloud cover.
That is your ration for the week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.
