Last Thursday charter skipper Luke Aston of the the Clare Dragoon in Carrigaholt took a group of anglers from England on a big fish expedition. The anglers had some exceptional fishing with two 100lb+ skate brought to the boat. But it was Jim Powell’s catch that really made the day.

5m six gill shark
Jim Powell caught one of the biggest fish ever landed in Irish waters when he brought this 5mtr six gill shark to the side of the boat making him our ‘Catch of the Week’ winner

It was one of the bigger six gill sharks that have been caught from the Clare Dragoon and at almost 5 m long Luke estimated the weight at around 1200lbs. For this incredible achievement Jim wins our Catch of the Week.
skate
This 100lb plus skate suddenly seemed not so bit after they saw a sixgill shark 10 times the size of it!

Despite focusing on big fish the anglers still managed to catch 15 species over 2 days and were more than happy with their experience of fishing in such rich waters. And if there was any doubt about how rich the waters are off Loop Head the Clare Dragoon was surrounded by bluefin tuna yesterday while fishing the reefs for cod and pollack. The huge fish were breaking all over the place and scattered over about 3 miles!
