NCFAC club members took the opportunity to unveil their new HQ during the championships and were delighted to have two former World Champions, Alan Scotthorne and Will Raison cut the ribbon. With funding from the Loughs Agency and the kind permission of Newry, Mourne & Down District Council the structure will be the ‘on the bank’ HQ for the coarse anglers.  The cabin has been placed strategically on the middle bank at O’Rourkes and doubles up as a permanent display for the promotion of coarse angling in the area.

50 years’ service to coarse angling in Newry

A surprise element to the activity on the bank during the Home Internationals was a presentation to Oliver McGauley for his service to angling in the area spanning 50 years. Lionel Knobbs of the Loughs Agency acknowledged the fact that Oliver first introduced match fishing to the Newry Canal running the very first event in 1965 as he presented him with a crystal award to mark the occasion.  Over the last 50 years Oliver has been instrumental in bringing international and domestic matches to the area and still continues to do so today. The longest serving Team Manager for Ireland at 16years, Oliver has voluntarily worked with anglers from several generations and is the Hon. President of the National coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland. His latest venture is the Newry Coarse Fish Angling club’s HQ which he has furnished with memorabilia from across the years for everyone to see.
