Lough Derg’s pike angling guides reported more good fishing over the last week. There seems to be no end to the supply of big pike at this incredible venue, no doubt testament not only to their skills at finding these big pike, but more importantly to making sure they are safely returned.

There were some nice fish for husband and wife team Pascale and Cyril from St. Tropez, fishing with TJ’sAngling Centre on Sunday. Their biggest fish was 95cm and they had a few other pike to keep the interested. At the end of last week Jules from France was out with TJ – it was a balaclava in the morning because of the cold north east wind and sun cream in the evening with temperatures in the mid teens, typical Irish weather. His best was also 95cm.

Paul Bourke advises that when trolling in calm conditions isn’t working a switch to casting the rainbow shads can change your luck. Setting the depth to 15m and adding a rattle for added attraction is working for Paul at the moment.
Pierre Montjarret had a very special fish to his boat over the weekend. French angler Didier hooked into a super fish that turned out to be a PB at a whopping 113cm. Even better was that this magic fish marked a special occasion for Pierre, his 100th 100cm+ fish to the boat this year.
Hermann Molenaar tells us that fishing through the cold and sometimes uncomfortable conditions is all part of winter pike fishing. Perseverance certainly pays off, but it is his parting words of advice that we should all pay heed to: Releasing a big one of last week, all part of fishing “Handle fish with care so someone else can catch this one again when it is bigger”.
