A cold and very windy Saturday didn’t stop Rookie Bass Angler Steven Neely from heading out – and it was worth it. Not only had Steven a fierce battle with a spirited pike but he also had to fight the wind as well. Read how he got on:
We arrived down in Co. Fermanagh around mid morning to find the river systems in full flood and most of the lakes coloured …. not looking too good. We hunted around until we found some decent enough looking water and broke out the Illex Dexter Shads 150 with the aim of teasing out a few pike in the less than ideal conditions.
I started off with the Rudd colour using a VMC 3/0 sickle jig head and a size 4 stinger hook – it was perfectly balanced and cast well on my Illex Stalking Special lure rod.
We had been fishing for about half an hour before we saw the first fish of the day – It wasn’t a big pike but I can honestly say it was the hardest take I have had from a pike on a shad …. it nearly ripped the rod clean out from my hands.
Not a bad start!
The wind really started to pick up now gusting to well over 50 mph but we put the heads down and fished on resulting in a few more nice sized pike for my father and my girlfriend.
All in all not a bad day if you take away the hideous weather …. Really impressed with the new Illex Dexter 150 shads – this is the second session I have had them wet and so far so good!
