Lindsey Clarke reports from the RIVER DROWES – Monday 1st  to Sunday 7th June 2015.

The Drowes had good water levels all week. The gauge read 0.65m on Monday and the river gently dropped and read 0.62m by the end of play on Sunday. This was a very good week on the Drowes with some 70 salmon caught with the majority of the catch consisting of grilse. Given here are some of the catches taken from the Catch Register at Lareen Estate. On Monday, Dave Peach recorded a 5lb grilse caught on shrimp from The Meadow. Peter Frei reported a 4lb grilse caught on a spinner from the Eel Weir. Phillip Rooney logged a 3½lb grilse caught on a spinner from the Blackwater and Daniel Catalin accounted for a 5lb grilse caught on a spinner from the Washstones.

On Tuesday, Yens Frei recorded a 3lb grilse caught on a Flying ‘C’ lure from the Black Hole and John Parkinson accounted for an 8lb salmon caught on shrimp from The Meadow. Wednesday was the top day with at least 18 salmon caught. Paul McGowan reported 5 grilse weighing 4, 4, 5, 5 & 7½lb caught on prawn from the deep water pools toward the bottom of the river with 2 of these being released. Stuart Morgan also had a good day recording 4 fish caught with 3 of these released again. The fish were caught on prawn from the deep water pools as above and weighed 4, 5, 7 and 10½lb. Paul McCausland reported a 4lb grilse caught on worm from the Upper Mill Pool. Phillip McGraw logged a 7lb salmon caught on prawn from the Mill pool. Urs Frei registered a 3lb grilse caught on worm from the Mill Pool. Michael Kruse recorded a 4lb grilse caught on worm from the Sea Pool. Julian Ciconte reported 3 grilse weighing 3, 3 & 4lb caught and released on a spinner from the High Bank and James Morrin accounted for a 5lb grilse caught on a fly from Lennox’s Bridge.

On Thursday, Bernard Breslin recorded a 7½lb salmon caught on a fly from the Perch Pool. Eoin McManus reported a 3½lb grilse caught on a spinner from the Boat House and Patrick O’Malley accounted for 2 fish weighing 4½ & 8lb caught on a fly from Briney’s. On Friday, Tens Frei recorded a 4½lb grilse caught on a fly from the Mill Pool. Denis Tritton reported a 3lb grilse caught on worm from the Mill Pool and Dave Peach accounted for 2 grilse weighing 2 & 3lb caught on worm from the Mill Pool. On Saturday, Brian McEvoy recorded an 8½lb salmon caught on a Flying ‘C’ lure from the Blackwater. Marty King reported a 10lb salmon caught on prawn from the Washstones and Nash McDaid accounted for a 5½lb grilse caught on a spinner from Rooney’s. On Sunday, Bill Likely logged a 7lb salmon caught on a Rapala from the Sand Hole and John Gill recorded 3 grilse weighing 3, 4 & 4lb caught on a spinner from Red Roof with 2 of these being released.
