Lindsey Clarke reports from LOUGH MELVIN – Sunday 1st to Sunday 8th February 2015.
Lough Melvin opened for salmon fishing on Sunday 1st February. Conditions were fair and a few well wrapped up, hardy souls set out for the opening day. There were no salmon recorded although Noel Johnston & boat partner Rodney Benson caught and released Ferox of 6lb & 3lb. The brown trout season does not open until the 15th February. We did not have to wait too long this season since the first Melvin salmon of the season was caught on Sunday by Niall Sweeney. The fish weighed 9lb 9oz and was caught off Bilberry Island. The settled weather forecast for the coming week will give fair angling conditions and we will see what the lough turns up.
