Ian Powell reports that with the Munster Blackwater is in good shape with a decent forecast for the week there should be some good fishing in the coming days…

16 March: It’s an overcast calm mild day here today. Air temperature +5ºC at 08.00. The forecast continues to be for high pressure building over Ireland. It should be dry from this evening right through next week and until the following Monday with some frosty nights. The upper river at Millstreet (80km upstream of the Lodge) has dropped considerably & is still falling quite slowly but steadily. The middle river at Killavullen (37km upstream of the Lodge) is showing the same pattern – dropping more slowly overnight. It is down to 1.71m at 09.15 this morning.

The lower river at Ballyduff is still falling quite quickly.
It is down to 0.91m at 09.45 this morning. Clarity is 3 – 3½ feet.

Water temperature at Ballyduff: 8.3ºC / 47.0ºF @ 09.00.

Water temperature at Killavullen: 6.4ºC / 43.5ºF @ 09.00.

Prospects.

The river is in excellent order for spinning today. It is still a bit high for the fly today but the clarity is well good enough.
The upper beats are just about be coming to fly order today Monday.  I had reports of fish moving through Fermoy yesterday.
With the dry weather continuing, the river will continue to improve steadily, and the coming week looks very promising indeed!
