Angling guide Peter Cunningham accompanied two Italian anglers Francesco Leggieri and his friend Claudio Guerrini on their recent visit to the Boyne Valley. The lads wanted to try their luck for an Irish salmon during their recent holiday to Ireland. Water conditions had risen slightly in the Boyne after some localized rain but was still in good condition and according to Peter a fish was a distinct possibility. Some nice fish had been taken in recent weeks with a number of fish in the 20+lb being landed.

This was the lads first time spinning for an Irish salmon and armed with licences, permits, rods, reels and an assortment of “Flying C’s” they headed to the Boyne to try their luck. Unbelievably, on his third cast Francesco struck into a big fish which took his black “Flying C” with a copper blade with relish. The fish made several great runs but stayed down and after 15 minutes, the fish which estimated to be around 16lb in weight was almost beaten. The fish came sliding towards the net but at the last second gave one final kick. He threw the single barbless hook and gained his freedom slightly prematurely. Francesco missed out on the photo opportunity with his first Irish salmon but has a great memory to take home with him. He has vowed to return to try his luck again on the River Boyne. No more fish were hooked during the session but the lads enjoyed the experience in the scenic surroundings of the Boyne Valley.
