Peter Aspinwall reports on the bass fishing around Clonakilty…

The best bass of the day 72cm and fat enough to make specimen weight

05 September: Six hours fishing yesterday was uneventful to say the least. Seven small Pollock and two mackerel. I came home and called my client for this morning, Ray Martin, to let him know that the fishing wasn’t great. His attitude was superb and was well up for the day’s session. Positive thinking produces positive results. We had 3 bass in the end – the best a monster at 72cm long and I firmly believe a specimen bass. Of course it was returned, along with the other two.

Mike Quirek told Peter "That was some top shelf guiding Pete!! Watching those big bass slamming the baitfish over the reef, seeing that double figure fish breech a few times, the cold beer and awesome ham sandwiches.. Just fantastic craic. Between Bass and Pollock my arm is aching this morning!"
Mike Quirke told Peter “That was some top shelf guiding Pete!! Watching those big bass slamming the baitfish over the reef, seeing that double figure fish breech a few times, the cold beer and awesome ham sandwiches.. Just fantastic craic. Between Bass and Pollock my arm is aching this morning!”

08 September: The neap tides are still producing bass. I had an 8lb fish to a surface popper on Sunday and Mike Quirke had this one yesterday. One of six to the boat, all coming to lures. Mike took the “Lions share” of the fish catching all but one of them. Think I’ll just stick to the guiding!
