Peter Aspinwall reports on the bass fishing around Clonakilty…

Clonakilty bass
There has been some great bass fishing around Clonakilty in the last week

01 Oct: Fabulous fishing over the last three days guiding Richard Blew, Dom McKay and Simon Abbott alongside Max Bond. Three excellent anglers that don’t mind putting in a long shift to get the results. Tuesday was the best day with thirty one fish landed between the three of them.

Not one fish was “deep hooked” and all of them were returned. The quality of fish this year has been phenomenal with a lot of the bass over five pound.

04 Oct: Yesterday was the perfect day for the lures. Light winds, plenty of cloud cover (at times) and voracious bass. Jason Nash joined me and witnessed the bay on top form. Ten bass to the boat (5 each) and we lost count of how many good sized Pollack.

Apart from the first bass that fell to a soft plastic the other nine all came to surface lures, the IMA skimmer. The skimmer also caught most of the Pollack too. The takes were savage and I’m sure at one point Jason managed to attract the attention of the only “cross-eyed” bass in West Cork after watching it come up and strike the skimmer four times, missing every time! Should have gone to Specsavers!!
