Barry from Rinnashark Sea Angling Club reports on their boat competition fished on Sunday…

It was good to be out for first time this year and with it being so early in the season we had planned on exploring the estuary for winter fishing.

Waterford estuary is rarely fished and has so much potential, summer fishing last year was good. It was a bit late in the year for the cod and east winds and slack tides didn’t help but we all managed a few fish. The whiting were a lot smaller than were going the last few months from the shore.

Whiting were the main catch with flounders and dabs and rockling (codling never showed – very unusual). It was a cold day with winds swinging SE to NE back to SE, but the constant flow of the helped to keep the fish some bit active. All sort of rigs were used with the full complement of baits-  lug, wraps, crabs,  maddies and mackerel…
