Danny Wyse reports that  West Cork and District SAC  got their season underway last weekend. Broadstrand provided the club with back-up shelter as they were blown off Garrylucas the chosen venue…

The fishing proved to be very scratchy, but there was a reasonable spread of fish right across the beach and I don’t think any of the 16 anglers who made it out blanked.

Whiting were caught in the first few daylight casts and we all thought once the darkness set in we would be busy with the hordes of fish that were bound to show up. Strangely though darkness didn’t seem to make any difference to the catch-rate and we all just soldiered on trying to pick up anything at all.

Jeff O’Donoghue had a little helper in the shape of his young son ,( I’m guessing 6ish years old ?) , in tow and Jeff said to me that he didn’t think the son would be much help when I offered up my opinion. Later I spotted the son sitting on Jeff’s box in the beach buddy eating a biscuit while Jeff was out in the rain and I was starting to agree with him.The rest of us fished on unhindered by the little people.

Although the fishing was slow the craic was good and I could hear people bursting out with laughter all-night and right along the beach, I don’t remember any comp with so much laughter before,…..I liked that.

In the end we collectively managed to catch 71 fish and 8 different species ; whiting , flounder , codling , coalie , 3 bearded rockling , 5 bearded rockling , dogfish and ,I’m delighted to say, Danny O’Riordan bagged the pools money with a thornback ray , well done Danny.

I fluked the only doggie that was caught and on my last cast aswell, this gave me enough for 3rd place.

Mike Carlton on lucky for some peg 1 took 2nd place well done Mike,…. and of course who should throw up the winning card ….only Jeff with the lucky mascot . We each caught 6 fish but Jeff’s were the better quality so again I’m delighted to say very well done to Jeff on 1st place !!!

Atleast one of the other lads caught 6 fish ( Stevey I think ?)and plenty more on 5 , it was all very close really …..
