On the penultimate day of Inland Fisheries Irelands’ Fisheries Awareness Week 2015, over seventy novice and improver anglers attended the Gormanston and District Angling Club event, to learn all about trout fishing at the Wavin Lake in Balrothery, North County Dublin. The event took place from 10 am to 4 pm and lots of trout were taken by many of the first time anglers. Fly casting instruction was delivered by fly casting instructor Robert Kenny, and following this participants were given the opportunity to avail of individual tuition. Expert members of the Gormanston and District Angling Club also demonstrated spinning techniques and the “how to” of getting started in this great hobby and pastime.
Participants were informed about tackle choice and how to pick the right gear, fly rods and reels and spinning gear, and how to set up their tackle. Members of the Gormanston and District Angling Club team also demonstrated how to play the fish as well as unhooking and handling techniques. This event was a catch and release event. Following the practical demonstrations, participants headed off to the lake to try their luck fly and spin fishing for the wily trout of the Wavin Lake.
Fishing was very good at the start of the event with lots of quality trout being landed. Fish to five pound were taken on fly and many fish 2lb plus were taken on spinner. However, fishing did slow as brilliant sunshine broke through just before lunch and the fish moved off into deeper water. A break for lunch and refreshments ended with the awarding of a cheque for €760 to the friends of Autism and ADHD by Gormanston and District Anglers Club.
Fishing remained tough in the early afternoon but as soon as it clouded over the lake burst into action again with lots of quality trout being take on fly and spinner.
The event was so popular that some anglers fished on after 4pm and the club has recruited a number of new members following the event. Many prizes including rods and reels, fly boxes, memberships and hats provided by a number of sponsors were also awarded during the day. The final day of FAW 2015 winds up with an event at Courtlough Fishery, Balbriggan tomorrow from 10am to 4pm. Please feel free to call in to the event if you get the opportunity. We would be delightful to see you.
