Angling Guide and journalist Mick Flanagan reports:
Jimmy Murray contacted me some weeks back from Queens in New York, and was really keen to catch his first Irish Pike on the fly. Even though Jimmy is originally from Lanesborough he had little or no time in recent years to lash a fly at the pike. This is all going to change he told me as we ventured out across Ree with his nephew Jamie Donoghue. The lads were kitted out to the last, and Jimmy ties all his own pike flies, and they really look the business. Thankfully the Ree pike taught the same and really hammered the brightly colored flies.
It was not all plain sailing and we struggled early Morning, but the dinner bells rang shortly after lunch and both lads were stuck into some cracking hard fighting pike. Young Jamie will never forget the battle he had with his first big Irish pike on the fly as it was pushing the 20lbs mark. Jimmy was also in the thick of the action, and was trilled to catch pike on flies he tied himself. I have a few that Jimmy gave me, and they will be tested on the Derravaragh pike very soon. I will be keeping in tough with Jimmy who works with Delta airlines, and keep him up to date on the pike-angling scene here in the Midlands.
