It was a beautiful day yesterday on the River Blackwater as I met up with Glenda Powell on the Blackwater Salmon Fishery at Kilmurry, just outside Fermoy. The water had dropped and cleared in the river and the river looked in perfect condition. On arrival I observed three fresh salmon move within a very short period of time and I was sorry that I was not fishing myself. Glenda has reported regularly that fish have been observed moving daily throughout the fishery and they were certainly moving yesterday. The temperature was well up at around 16 degrees and flies were buzzing along the banks and an occasional trout had started to feed on the surface.

Other anglers present were also reporting seeing fish on all sections of the fishery so it looked as if there would be a good chance that a fish might be caught. John Burgoyne from Macroom had arrived on the south bank after hooking and losing a fish on another section of the fishery and he also had a hit from another fish as well. John entered the water and a couple of fish moved around him but he did not get distracted and continued to cover the fish that had moved below him. Within a few minutes his rod tip was bouncing as a fresh run fish stripped his line to the backing. This happened on three occasions but John carefully played the fresh run fish which was eventually played out and expertly netted by Glenda. After a few quick photos, the fish was rested and allowed time to recover before being released back unharmed to the river, much to the approval of the assembled audience of anglers that had been watching the epic battle.

Also visiting on the Blackwater Salmon Fishery was Kathi Williams from Oregon in the USA who enjoyed her fishing but just loved being out pursuing her passion of many years. David Parker from the UK also fished but was happy just to be out and about and joining in the banter with his fellow anglers.

The Blackwater Salmon Fishery consists of five beautiful beats, which can cater for up to 14 anglers per day. Three of these beats are located on the lower river below Fermoy and two are located on the middle river above Fermoy.
