Lindsey Clarke reports from Owenea Fishery – Monday 1st  to Sunday 7th August 2016.

The Owenea ran at low levels at the start and end of the week but we received good floods on Wednesday (0.48m), Thursday (0.39m) and Friday (0.33m). The gauge average for the week was good reading 0.26m. The river was reasonably well attended with 48 visiting rods fishing for the week. There was not a huge run of grilse for the week it would seem but rods did report reasonable catches of salmon caught mainly on the days of the good floods. Given here are some of the catches taken from the Fishery Catch Register. On Wednesday, Billy Blair recorded 2 grilse weighing 3lb each caught and released on a fly rom beat 8.

On Thursday, Hugh Frazer recorded a 5½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 4. Bill Murray reported 2 grilse weighing 4 & 6lb caught on a fly from beat 5. Dessie Coyle logged a 5lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 7 and Jim Mclean accounted for 2 grilse weighing 4lb each caught on a spinner from beat 8. On Friday, Dessie Coyle recorded a 6lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 7. On Saturday, Billy Blair reported a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 8. The forecast for the coming week is for more unsettled and wet weather and we expect there to be good water levels at periods over the week
