Lindsey Clarke reports from the RIVER DROWES – Monday 4th April to Sunday 10th April 2016.
The Drowes ran at nice water levels all week. On Monday the gauge read 0.63m. The river dropped slightly to Wednesday but rain during the week meant it crept back up and the gauge at the end of play on Sunday read 0.64m. This week seemed quieter on the river and there was around 10 salmon caught that we know of to date. Rods fishing the Sea Pools at the weekend reported seeing good numbers of salmon entering the fishery on the high tides but were unable to tempt them!
On Tuesday, Michael Kruse recorded a 10lb salmon caught on a Rapala lure from the Crooked Hole and Trevor Doherty accounted for a 5lb grilse caught on a Cascade fly from Briney’s. On Wednesday, Michael Kruse reported a 5lb grilse caught and released on an Orange Shrimp fly from the Mill Pool and Chris McDaid accounted for an 8lb salmon caught on a Rapala lure from the Mill Pool. On Thursday, John Hill recorded a 7lb salmon caught and released on a spinner from the Sand Hole.
On Friday, Michael Leslie reported a 5lb grilse caught and released on a fly from the Blackwater. There were at least 4 other salmon caught of which we are still awaiting details. The weekend was the busiest for angling attendance as would be expected but the fish seemed very dour and the only report we heard was of 1 salmon being hooked and lost at Lennox’s Bridge.
