Billy Downes reports that as of Monday  23rd May water levels on the Laune were up to 1.2m at the Laune Bridge. Now that it has cleared there will be perfect water for all methods for the week. The only fish Billy heard of for the week were landed by two fishing buddies Colm Heffernan and Danny Joy, both caught spinning. One on Saturday and one on Sunday. Colm’s fish was a fine salmon of 10 lbs caught at O’Connors on Saturday and Danny’s fish was a 9 lb sea liced bar of silver caught on Sunday.

Colm Heffernan's first fish from the Laune for 2016, hopefully lots more. And what a fish - 10lbs from O'Connor's spinning.

Apart from these fish the rest of us had to be happy with some good sport with sea trout in the lower fisheries especially. There has been a very good brown trout rise these evenings also and if you ‘match the hatch’ you could have some fun with trout up to 14/15 inches.

Members are of the opinion that it would be worthwhile targeting sea trout with appropriate gear rather than going after scarce salmon just now.

As I always say if you get the timing right there is always a chance of a fish, now probably confined to the days when the commercial nets are off from Saturday to Monday.

Prospects: There is a chance if you venture out especially with ideal water we have for the week.

Permits for Laune Anglers waters from now to 31st July cost only €25 excellent value compared to other fisheries and the chances of a fish.

Beat 3:

A few salmon have been caught on Beat 3 already and Thomasz Ekert reports excellent brown trout fishing as a by-catch to his efforts at catching a salmon. Last week he caught more than 30 brown trout and one sea trout. The biggest brown trout of 45 cm he lost a brown trout approx. 60 cm.  Please note that the €10 trout permit allows an angler to fish for brown trout ‘fly only’ If you want to spin or worm fish you need to purchase a €25 permit.
