Last week Sea Bass Hunter Tomasz Eckert had some great fishing at his usual haunts in Co. Kerry. On Wednesday he caught a very impressive 20 sea bass, 7 of which he tagged. Several fish were more than 2 kg but in general they averaged about 1.5-2 kg.

The following day he was out again. The fishing was not as productive and he finished his session with four Bass between 1.5 and 2 kg. Three of these were tagged as part of the ongoing bass tagging programme being run by IFI. Encouraged by his success Tomasz was back on the water again yesterday. He had a total of three in the afternoon through the big waves, weeds and milky water. This could be the best ever start to the season.

John Quinlan from Thatch Cottage Ireland reports that they had  A little bit of spring silver on the good old Fiish minnow last week. Its great to see the bass reports rolling in from Kerry despite sea temperatures still being bit on the low side.

National Bass Programme

IFI has established a National Bass Programme to collect data on bass in order to provide scientific advice to support management and conservation of Ireland’s bass resource. Bass is Ireland’s only marine fish species which is managed for angling. The programme is being developed to determine the status of bass stocks and also to improve understanding of their ecology and biology in Ireland for the long-term sustainability of the species.
