Dublin based Blackrock SAC held there third club master angler compition on Saturday night last on the north beach at Wicklow. With the weather forecast not looking good for the Wexford beaches due to a strong south easterly wind and heavy showers, it was decided to fish the north beach in Wicklow town from 6-11 pm. Despite the inclement conditions 13 anglers turned out to the peg draw and proceeded to there drawn peg number for the club match .
The daylight session of the match was very scratchy with only a couple of anglers, Liam Rice and Jimmy Farrell, scoring early with a few small whiting. The rest of the anglers were struggling to find fish as the heavy consistent rain and strong south easterly wind made conditions very tough.
As darkness fell, the low number pegs started to find whiting and dogfish with Wayne Ryan and Eugene Andrews battling it out with doubles and trebles of counting whiting and a few dogfish to add to the score card.
Further down in the high pegs fishing was patchy with anglers not catching as good as the low pegs. Best was Jimmy Farrell with 18 fish, Rory McDowell with 15 fish and Des Daly with 15 as well. In the last hour it was down to pegs 1 & 2 Wayne and Eugene to battle it out for the win. A good run of dogfish at distance on sandeel baits on clip down rigs was enough to claim the win on the night with 28 fish. Catches consisted mainly of whiting, dogfish, rockling and flounder.
The results of the Blackrock SAC match are as follows
- 1st Eugene Andrews 28 fish,
- 2nd Wayne Ryan 18 fish,
- 3rd Jimmy Farrell 18 fish.
