Michael Flanagan from Midland Angling reports on a some great rainbow fishing on Lough Lene…

Val Wynne and Owen mcEnteggart were back in Mullingar last week, and enjoyed another fantastic few days fishing. Val is eighty this year and Owen is not far behind, and both are still nuts on fly-fishing. During the week the deadly duo stayed in the Annabrook House Hotel and had the height of praise for Berty and his staff.

Val Wynne and Owen McEnteggart are fishing buddies for years. Val is 80 years old this season, and Owen is not far behind.

The fishing was also mighty and they had super rainbow trout on Dry flies on Lene tied by Owen. I have a few coming in the post, and last year I won the Lough Ennell Perpetual Cup on a fly tied by Owen. Now that says a lot for his flies, as catching trout on Ennell can be tough to say the least.

Also on the lake were Stephen Neylon and Barry Conlon. The two boys fished last Tuesday 10th may and landed six trout up to 2.5lbs. Best flies black and olive klinkhammers.

They were so impressed by the quality of the trout that they returned on Friday and as luck would have it got even better sport. Stephen had four Lene rainbows between 3.5lbs and 4.5lbs on buzzer in wind and sunshine. The trout were hammering duckflyand when hooked gave terrific accounts of themselves.

Yes the fine weather had many families out last weekend enjoying their fishing, and just chilling out in the glorious sunshine. Mind you make sure you have good sun block as not only will you get direct burns from the sun, wind burns are also a problem on the bigger lakes.

I managed to entice Sylvia and daughter April out on Lene and we had some lovely trout, and April had a beautiful colored pike. Young Cathal Flanagan who celebrated his 7th Birthday last Saturday May 14th was also in the thick of the action with his dad J.J.
