Ballinlough Fishery in Mayo

It was a productive month at Ballin Lough Fishery near Westport, Co. Mayo, where 28 rods accounted for a total catch of 80 trout with 66 fish being released.

The month of June produced some notable highlights, including an impressive 13-fish catch for Daithi Ryan, which featured the heaviest trout of the month at 6 lb taken on a Blob. Elsewhere, Tommy Carroll and his boat partner enjoyed good sport by landing 11 trout up to 3.5 lb using a combination of Pheasant Tail Nymphs and Fabs Orange patterns. Ian Craig and Paul Lahart also shared a great moment on the water, successfully landing a fine 3.25 lb rainbow trout.

Future prospects also look excellent as the lake has been recently restocked.

Ballin Lough Fishery

Ballinlough is a shallow, limestone lake of 22 hectares located 3.2km north of Westport and is managed by IFI. It is a rich lake with a marl bottom and has been stocked with rainbow trout and brown trout. The fish are known to be free rising, and are encouraged by hatches of olives, sedges and wind-blown terrestrials. Trout can be taken on traditional wet flies including Peter Ross, Bibio, Invicta to mention but a few. Streamer patterns such as the Minkie and nymphs can also work well. Dry flies, however, can also provide great sport particularly during evening times and during sedge hatches.
