Lindsey Clarke reports from RIVER DROWES – Monday 25th to Sunday 31st January 2016.
At the start of the week water levels were lovely on the Drowes. On Monday the gauge read 0.69m. Heavy rain and sleet over the week meant water levels rose as the week progressed and by the end of Sunday, the river was running at a high level once again with the gauge reading 0.86m. The fishery was quiet overall and certainly the miserable conditions over the week did nothing to encourage anglers to fish.
On a brighter note, on Wednesday, local angler Eoin McManus reported the 2nd salmon of the season. This was an 8lb salmon caught on a Flying ‘C’ lure from the Corner of the Blackwater. Eoin sportingly released the fish and this earned him the prize for the 1st Catch & Release fish of the year, namely a GoPro camera.
Well done Eoin.
The forecast is for the wet weather to continue and water levels on the Drowes will probably remain high over the coming week. Not a worry as far as the salmon are concerned!
