The Munster Blackwater finished well after a flood put the river out of order for much of the last week of the season…
28 September: The river was in a big flood today – this photo from Glenda Powell at at Blackwater Salmon Fishery gives an idea of conditions…
29 September: There were 2 salmon caught and released today on the Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery. The lucky anglers were Ben Riley and Stuart McDowell.
30 September: Connie Corcoran reports a good end to the season at the Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery with 10 fish being hooked on the beats; 8 landed and all 8 released. Connie sent a huge well done to Stuart Mcdowell landing his first ever fish on the fly. Glenda Powell tells us her anglers had a wonderful day with some great fish caught for some great people today. All the fish were released. Among the anglers was Glenda herself, finishing her 20th season on the river with this nice salmon.
Glenda said “This has been a great year for our fishery despite low water conditions for most of the year. Alternative methods of fly fishing such as hitching flies, stripping micro trebles and using techniques suitable for the conditions have really paid off for some anglers this season. We hosted many courses on Spey Casting, Low Water Techniques, Hitching and Skagit Casting, and we will be running these again next season.
“We were very pleased with the numbers of salmon caught this season and also the size of some of the fish were very impressive for the River Blackwater. We caught two salmon over 20lb and numerous salmon in the 15-20lb bracket. A large percentage of our fish were safely returned again this year.”

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery
Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.
