Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane which where another specimen sea trout was reported…
28/4/17 Where do I start, well I suppose at the beginning and sadly the end is like the beginning and why do I say this well my Noble anglers went out first thing this morning empty handed and came back to their harbours this evening empty handed and one can only come to the conclusion that their choice of flies and lures have a lot to be desired and with 10 boats out manipulating this day, they ought to be ashamed of their performance. Wind West light to fresh with good cloud cover. Rrainfall 0.2mm. Maximum air temperature 11.9c.
29/4/17 I start on a sad note and for good reason, its with great sympathy that I have to inform you that my neighbour Mrs. Phyllis Greenan RIP of Douglas, Co Cork and of Caherdaniel West, Co Kerry, sadly past away on the 27th and on behalf of all the good people of Caherdaniel and Kerry I would like to send our deepest sympathy’s to her son Philip and all her family and friends and on a personal note, sorry Philip for your great loss and I will always remember you holding up your first Salmon with your Mum down by the Lake, all I can say is your Mum may be gone but will never be forgotten. Now to today’s fishing news, Lough Currane was wild this morning with a strong SE wind blowing but this didn’t deter four boats manipulating in all departments and as the 5 bells rang my Noble Anglers came in and looked at their calculators, low and behold all they could only register was a 0! need I say more. Wind as already stated, overcast with heavy showers throughout the day. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 0.5mm. Maximum air temperature 12.4c.
30/4/17 It was another wild day on Lough Currane, wild or not, anglers headed out and it’s the fly anglers that take all the headlines plus some mighty quotes! So to the action and we head for the C&R fly department at the Ledge, UK angler Mr. John Eames, while fishing with his Gillie, caught a fine 8 lbs. Salmon. Now for John’s quote of the day! 8lb Salmon caught on a Silver Stoat returned – I did not fail in my duties!!!!!!! Now we head for a Salmon fly fishing lesson, for the Gillie and the client, when fly fishing one shouldn’t leave your renowned fly fishing station and for good reason, you might lose your spot to other renowned fly anglers and land up with egg on your face, so remember when taking a rest make sure your within the boundary’s of the Station!! Now we head for the Sea Trout fly department, UK angler Mr. Phil Staniforth, while fishing with his gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught a fine 4lbs. Sea Trout and now Dominic’s quote of the day, no Photo too rough and broke my Oarlocks, that’s how rough it was out there and I’m very tired after a hard day holding the boat, time for a well earned pint!! Now we head for the trolling department, German Angler fishing out of www.butlerarms.com Mr. Axel ZurBrugge caught a fine Sea Trout on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and Neil also reported to me that in the past few days he and his client caught and released two Seatrout while fishing the world Famous Butler Pool and www.watervillegolflinks.ie Wind SE gale blowing at times with reasonable cloud cover. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 13.6mm.Maximum air temperature 12.6c.
1/5/17 Mr. Joe Lane of Co. Cork was the toast of the Lough Currane anglers today and for good reason, while trolling with his good friend, Mr. Liam Boland also of Co. Cork, caught a cracker of a 6 lbs. 6 ozs Sea Trout on a Rapala. Joe was telling me that he had one almighty battle, but it wasn’t long before the Sea Trout came to the surface and his good friend Mr. Liam Boland was ready and waiting with the net and as they say the rest is history and by all accounts there is some celebration this evening in Cork. Now for the Salmon news and what can I say? not a lot because they failed miserably in their duties with the flie and lure. Wind WNW light with reasonable cloud cover at times. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 7.6mm. Maximum air temperature 12.1c.
2/5/17 There were a few nice boats out manipulating this day with the fly and the lure and trying their best to stimulate their fly’s and their lure’s to attract the Wild Atlantic Salmon or a Lough Currane Premier Sea Trout and what did they get for their efforts, as this is a Family Blog, I will be as polite as one can be and its simple, they enticed absolutely nothing. As the evening fell my Noble anglers headed for the nearest watering hole to talk about the one that got away, as the Guinness hit their vital organs the losses and weights got bigger, you could say all in an anglers days repertoire. Wind W then veered SE with reasonable cloud cover. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 0.5mm. Maximum air temperature 14.0c.
3/5/17 You could say that the weather was in control of the anglers today and for good reason, with bright sunshine all day and a light wind from the West, one would think that the high stool and a pint of larger in the hand was the order of the day, well think again because UK angler Mr. Mark Knowles, caught a fine 8 lbs. Salmon on the fly off the point of Darby’s Island, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Terence Wharton junior. So to all you anglers that say a bright day is no good for fishing you can Mark that as incorrect. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.2mm. Maximum air temperature 16.0c.
That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.
