David McEvoy reports from Delphi where they’ve just had their first salmon of the new season…
 Well we’re up and running here at Delphi since the 1st of February and Bob Hadden who was on a short visit from the US landed the 1st of the season on Friday morning.
It was indeed well deserved as Bob is now in his 20th year fishing in Delphi. He had fished a couple of days earlier last week with no success, but on Friday he was joined by Steve Jones who also rose a fish. Bob landed his, a beautiful 8lbs3ozs sea liced fish in the Deadmans on a cold, bright, sunny February day. The river was at 28, with water temperatures just over 6 degrees C. The fish took a Cascade Conehaed fished on a floating line. The lower water, combined with low temperatures probably makes it easier to target fish this time of year as they tend to move more slowly through the river.
Needless to say, we were all delighted to see the first fish landed and Bob was over the moon. It is probably the second fish landed in the country this year and more than likely the first on the fly. I may be incorrect about the above but it’s great to have a fish landed.
We have had relatively light fishing pressure since the 1stwhen we had our Blast and Cast group from Bavaria. Their Cast did not live up to the great heights of two years ago but a good time was had by all. We have a serious group of Irish anglers this weekend led by Angus Sutherland, who will leave no stone unturned in Pursuit of Silver. The weather is forecast cold and dry but the water should hold up for another few days and we do have availability from Tuesday on, so if any of you feel like brushing off the cobwebs, feel free to give us a shout because as one of our great angler’s always said; “You’d Never Know The Minute”.
I should also note that we have lost two great friends and customers of Delphi in the last month. David Hewetson-Brown who always came in week 24 with Richard Maye and their wives Susan and Mary. He was a great character and always on good form. He will be sadly missed by all. John Bartleet who came with his wife Felicity also passed on and again he will be missed by all. May they both Rest in Peace.
