Tralee Bay Sea Angling Club reports on their Christmas Competition fished at Fenit…

15 December: What a great year we have had in 2018! The last match of the year on Fenit was last Sunday from 2 to 6. A great turn out of 30+ anglers took part on a very cold and windy day that would of be far more comfortable in front of the fire. The fishing was slow at the beginning with some undersize whiting making an appearance. Thankfully the rain stayed away for the most part and we were greatful.

The turn of the tide also meant a turn in fortune for the fishing.  The first major sign was Leonard almost losing his rod over the side of the pier. Was it a bass? A big Coalies? A rogue Mullet? Lots of ideas were bandied about during the fight and when it was finally landed with the help of Alison. Then the heart breaking news… Sea trout don’t count in our matches. No matter how big they are (even 5lb ones).

Back at the pub there was plenty of fun as the prizes were awarded

As the light faded the fish really came out to play Phil Troy James and Chris hit a run of fish. Eugene had a sizeable lead but there was a lot in pursuit. Whiting, dabs, Coalies and flounder made up the majority of the catches. The junior section was just as competitive. Some tall tales had Finn with 7 fish in the first hour. Craig Oisìn and paddy were flat out but they were chasing the wrong angler. All the while Eoin was quietly landing fish and time was drawing to a close thankfully for all the frozen anglers not close to enough to Mark Greenwood and his Kelly kettle.

We made our way to the Greyhound bar where Aidan had the fire and chips on and man were we greatful. It ended being very tight aside from Eugene who turned it on in his home venue to take the win.
