Fishery manager Osgur Grieve reports on fishing from 29th August – 5th September.
We have had 17 grilse landed for the week. On Tuesday 29th fishing duo Michael Pettigrew and Neil Walker fished with us and both released a wild fish each of 3lbs from the Falls Pool and Lower Garden Pool using a Cascade. On Wednesday 30th Stephen Pay and Chris Thornton fished the morning on Beat 5 and both had a grilse each weighing 2.8lbs and 4lbs on a Black Pennell on the dropper, both of these grilse were from the Boat Pool. Later that day James Mannion (UK) had a wild grilse of 2.5lbs on a Black Pennell from the Garden Pool. Saturday 2nd saw the return of regular anglers Mick Vincent, Paddy Donegan, Albert Caffrey and Donal Chambers for the week. Paddy Donegan was first off the mark releasing a 4lbs wild grilse from the Falls on a shrimp fly, 20 minutes later Mick Vincent released a 4lbs wild grilse from the Falls using a Cascade. On Sunday 3rd visiting angler Malcolm Simpson released a 4lbs wild grilse from the Falls. Albert Caffrey released a 5.5lbs grilse from Kings on Beat 4 using a Sunray Shadow, and Mick Vincent released a 5.5lbs grilse from the Bog on Beat 4 using a Jock Scott.
Monday 4th was a red letter day for Paddy Donegan, releasing 3 wild grilse of 3.5lbs, 2.5lbs and 4.5lbs from the Garden Pool, Sea Pool and Falls Pool and then went on to release another of 5lbs from Colonel’s Run on Beat 6, all on a shrimp fly. Albert Caffrey also released 2 wild grilse of 4.5lbs from the Sea Pool later that day.
On Tuesday 5th Paddy Donegan was into action again releasing a 4lbs wild grilse from the Falls, again on a shrimp fly and 5 sea-trout of 0.5lbs from the Quarry Pool on Beat 2 on a Collie Dog. Mick Vincent also released 2 sea-trout of 0.5lbs. from the Quarry Pool on a Bibio.
It was great to see a few fresh fish enter the system again and the use of older traditional fly patterns such as the Black Pennell being used to good effect. At the moment the river is rising slightly to 1m and with the rain forecast for the coming few days it should re-awaken the rest of our fish up river.
