The results are out – Ray Collopy is new National Pike Champion.  IFPAC reports…

The 30th National Pike Championships Final was held last Saturday the 21st April 2018 on a stretch of river in Longford. The clear blue sky and hot sun that marked Saturday did not make for ideal pike fishing. In the end the 50 anglers caught some 163, but most of these were small enough fish, unsurprisingly.

Fishing was tough in the bright, clear conditions. There were not many pike of this size weighed in. Rodney Gaynor had the biggest pike at 15lb 8oz

When the fish was over it was back to the Longford Arms for the awards dinner. After enjoying our excellent presentation dinner, Irish Federation of Irish Pike Angling Clubs Chairman John Chambers made a short speech thanking all involved in the organisation of the event and special thanks to our sponsor GO HIRE Limited who have sponsored the event the last couple of years. 

Then €100 was presented to Patrick Foran for catching the biggest pike in the qualifying heats 18lb 08oz.

Rodney Gaynor then got €100 for the best pike in the Final 15lb 08oz. Joint second was David Walsh and Ian Church.

The winner, Ray Collopy, will captain the top 10 anglers who will be the Irish team who will fish against their British opposite numbers in Ireland over a 2 day match next October.

You will note from the above that the vast majority of pike caught were pretty small. Special presentation was made to Pat O’Grady when he was crowned king and was presented with T-shirt and crown from Eddie McGuirk. Once again we would like Eamon, Cait , Pauline and all at Longford Arms Hotel for looking after us so well.

Lovely glass trophies were also presented to each of the 11 heat winners – Dodger Smyth, Laurence Marshall, Paul Comiskey, Robbie McShane, Mark Kiernan, Jody Kiernan, Eugene McCabe, Pat O’Grady, Diarmuid Smyth, Paddy Dimbylow, Patrick Foran

We were based in The Longford Arms Hotel in Longford town. We must say that we were really looked after well by the staff and the quality of our food at the presentation dinner was second to none.

The Irish Federation of Pike Angling Clubs (IFPAC) is a body representing pike anglers in Ireland, North and South.The IFPAC was founded on 17th January 1988 at a meeting held at the Ardboyne Hotel, Navan. The membership for that year stood at fifteen clubs representing six hundred anglers, today membership of IFPAC is approaching 100 affiliated clubs representing in excess of seven thousand anglers from all walks of life.
