Mick Flanagan reports on all the pike fishing news from the midlands…

ENNELL NEWS

Last Sunday Lough Ennell Trout Preservation Association hosted their annual club pike competition. This competition is sponsored by my old angling pal Con Hope, and John Dooner won with a pike of 7lbs 8oz. Con was on hand to present John with the Perpetual Cup in Whitebridge Bay. I was talking to some L.E.T.P.A. Officers and they are very concerned by water levels in Whitebridge Bay. As we speak the L.E.T.P.A. Officers and committee members are speaking with some contractor’s regarding the dredging of Whitebridge Bay in the coming weeks. Anglers with boats in Whitebridge Bay are asked if possible to remove their boats, so as the Bay will be clear when work begins. More on this in next weeks Angling Focus.

ED AND MANTAS

Regular visitors to Midland waters Edvinas Cinga and pal Mantas Martinauskas were back drifting across Mullingar last weekend fishing for pike. Now settled and living in Ireland for quite a number of years the Lithuanian lads love their fishing, and have featured in Angling Focus, over the years on Owel, Ennell, Lene, and Derravaragh.

This trip Ed and Mantas were doing a bit of dead baiting, and lure fishing for pike and had some success. The deadly Duo only landed 4 pike, but some of the fish were in mint condition and pushing the magical double figures.

MICK AND DES

I teamed up with fellow Midland Pike Angling Club member Des Howell of Maynooth for a planned day at the pike when the trout season was over. Des drops down every weekend for pike and perch fishing, and is a top class angler. Last Sunday we had a few early Halloween Howlers, and I managed to catch 3 pike well up in the double figures, hitting 16-17lbs in weight. On we lure fished all day as Des is a fanatical jerk bait angler, and has some selection of top pike lures. Early in morning with the heavy mist and dark conditions we struggled, but as soon as the sun came out, the pike came out to play. It reminded me of years back talking to some of our older seasoned pike anglers, who told me bright condition bright lures.

This did actually work on our bigger Midland Lakes, and as soon as the sun came out the Silver Spoons could be seen dangling from the trolling rods. Now that’s your “Top Tip” for this week. If you’re out over the Halloween bank Holiday weekend, and latch onto a few frighting Halloween Pike, send in a pic and a few details of your angling adventure.
