Jason Nash reports from the River Bandon where an opening day springer was landed on for the first time in a number of years…

15 February: Today heralded the opening of the season on the Bandon River and with it the first spring salmon was caught by club member Leon Costello. Leon caught and released a 9lb, sea liced bar of silver this afternoon on a Flying C after a 20 minute battle. This is an amazing achievement as it has been quite a few years since a fresh fish was caught on opening day.  Well done Leon!

The water was high and cold today but very fishable with excellent clarity. A few kelts were reported caught and in very good condition. I had the pleasure of releasing a large, spent sea trout which would have been 5lb+ in 2017. Let’s hope all this positive news is a sign of what’s in store for 2018!!

Kilcoleman Fishery, Enniskeane, is renowned for its hospitality. The owners David and Patricia Lamb make a particular effort to make their guests feel at home. Past visitors have described the atmosphere as ‘laid back’ and the accommodations as ‘cosy’. Kilcoleman is “fly only” throughout the entire season. However, in certain water conditions, spinning is permitted for salmon. Trout angling is “fly only” at all times.
