David McEvoy reports from the Delphi Fishery…

06 July: To say the weather has been a little unusual, compared to our normal in these parts would be a slight understatement. Both May and June have been relatively dry, with 101.9mms (4.01”) and 118.7mms (4.67”) respectively. Most rainfall in June 97.9mms (3.85”) fell in three days throughout the month. Our last flood was on the 19thof June and since then we have had .2mms on the 4thof July. We have experienced long dry spells before, but last week temperatures were exceptional. Officially we had a heatwave (i.e. five consecutive days with temperatures in excess of 25 degrees) in Delphi. It started on the 26thand continued until the 30th, with temperatures peaking on the 28that 30.4 degrees. It has dropped a little since but is still in the low 20’s most days. Many of our anglers, who I have never seen in bathers before actually took to the water to swim. My dogs actually lay in the water to cool off.  To say the scenery has been spectacular would be a slight understatement.

Tracy Mulligan from the US had her first ever salmon, a fish of 8lbs, on a Willie Gunn Tube

Despite the weather, our fishing was actually quite good, although it has slowed up since Tuesday. We have actually landed 15 fish since my last update. Our long standing group from Bavaria actually caught thirteen for their week, despite the heatwave and a days sea fishing thrown in. Some of these were already noted in the last blog. Continuing on from that, Holger Peres had a fish from the Stream on Finlough of 4lbs8ozs on a Delphi Collie. Martin Nolde had one later that night, again off Finlough of 8lbs11ozs on a Collie Dog. Reinhard had two on the 27th, one from the Kings Pool of 3lbs6ozs and one from the Stream on Finlough of 3lbs14ozs, both on a Sunray Shadow. Geoff Lucas also had one from Morrisons of approx. 4lbs on a Delphi Collie.

On the 28th, Stefan Krammer landed his first ever salmon, off Finlough of 5lbs12ozs on a Collie Dog. That evening Martin Nolde had a nice grilse of 4lbs10.5lbs from the Rock Pool on a Cascade. Benny Weltz then had a fish of 3lbs3ozs from Salmon City on Finlough on a Collie Dog. Holger Peres had a fish on the 29thand 30thfrom the Bridge Pool of 3lbs5ozs and 4lbs3ozs on Beaded Nymphs. That brought our total catch for June to 26.

By the 1stof July the river had dropped to 8, but the day was overcast and cooler. Hans Majeron managed to land two fish off the river in the morning. The first was 3lbs13ozs from the Meadow Pool and the second approx. 5.5lbs from the Deadmans. Both were taken on a Red Allie Tube.

On the 2ndChristopher Dielmann from the US landed his first ever salmon, a fish of 2lbs13ozs on a Willie Gunn Tube.

The following day the 3rdTracy Mulligan from the US also managed to land her first ever, a fish, of 8lbs, also on a Willie Gunn Tube. Both fish were taken off Doolough. Finally, Giovanni Mazoleni had a fish of 4lbs5ozs from the Turn Pool on a Beaded Nymph.

Again, I must take this opportunity to thank all our customers, who despite the dreadful conditions have always been in good form and have enjoyed their time with us here at Delphi.
