David McEvoy reports from the Delphi Fishery…
09 June: The weather here in Delphi has been stunning since my last update, although not ideal for salmon fishing! I must again say that we are extremely lucky with the long standing customers and friends we have, in that they truly appreciate Delphi for the beautiful place it is.
There has been no rain since my last update, except for a thunder shower we had yesterday, when 7.5mms fell in about 15 minutes and put the river from -6 to 0. Air temperatures have been consistently 20+ for the last week and water temperatures peaked at 21.6 degrees on Thursday. At present, according to the long-range forecast, it looks like we will get rain on Wednesday, which would be most welcome to all those of a piscatorial nature!
The draft net quota on the Killary is complete so any fish waiting to run, should be able to do so unhindered, when we get some water. On a positive note, to date, I have seen very few lice infested sea trout post smolts returning, which would make me hopeful of good sea trout returns this year. This should also mean that migration conditions for salmon smolts were good, the proof of which we will hopefully see in the next two years.
Needless to say salmon fishing has been extremely difficult, with only one landed since my last update. Jim Stafford had a nice fish of approx. 9.5lbs from the Turn Pool on a Cascade in very difficult conditions. Out total for May was 40 which was again above our 10 year average. Total for the year to date is 114.
With a bit of luck and rain this week, there should be fish to report by next weekend.
