Dan O’Neill reports from the River Nore…
02 May: Quite a substantial amount of rain Saturday night and most of Sunday morning, The river was starting to become angry, a slight tint of colour and swelling.This however didn’t stop Paul who’s persistence in any angling situation is admirable. Paul took to the middle reaches of the fishery to try his luck of which today was all good. Spotting a nice area, Paul began casting and it wasn’t long before the first salmon came to the net. A quick greeting and picture saw the salmon returned safely on its journey.
So this was the first salmon on the Mount Juliet fishery this season. It wasn’t much longer before Paul was into another salmon. Slightly smaller than the first but any salmon is a much welcomed visitor by any salmon angler. The fish was netted, pictured and returned again safely. Nice to see these fish and in such lovely condition.
A very well done and congratulations to Paul who had had the first 2 salmon on the fishery this season. His admirable persistence I spoke of earlier paid off nicely,

General Information
The river Nore is a beautiful river that meanders it way through counties Laois and Kilkenny before joining with its sister river the Barrow just upstream of New Ross on its way to the sea. The Nore gets a good run of Atlantic salmon and the river which is currently open for angling on a catch and release basis produced 563 salmon in 2015 and 599 salmon in 2016. Salmon fishing is available on a number of stretches including the Mount Juliet Fishery which is located just outside Thomastown, Co Kilkenny, approximately mid-way between Kilkenny City and New Ross.
