Aaron Maughan from AM Pike Guiding has been in contact to let us know about his pike angling exploits over the Christmas period and into the New Year. Aaron and his clients have been having great success lately on lakes in the Longford, Westmeath and Cavan areas.
On one of his outings Aaron had what he described as a red letter day catching and releasing an astonishing 14 pike to 19lbs with no fish under 14lbs. being recorded. In the first days of the New Year John Farrell had two fish, one of 16.4 and later in the day a super fish of 19.8. On another day Kieran Gill and Paddy Glenn boated 8 fish to 22lb 10ozs.
The weather over the period was changeable, cloudy and cold and on his last trip on 5th January there was hazy rain most of the day. Water levels have also generally been up. According to Aaron a nice chop on the water helped move the baits around and the fishing was absolutely fantastic with anglers getting some really nice fish well into the mid-teens and above. The fish came to either casted lures on a slow retrieve, dead-baits float fished over target pike or slow float trolled dead-baits. In the last 4 trips we have had 45 large pike, the biggest weighing 22.10 and measuring 110cm. Most of the fish have been over 12lb.
Despite the cold and the time of year all of the pike were fighting fit and gave a great account of themselves. All fish were carefully returned after a quick photo. #CPRSavesFish
