Shane Gallagher reports from Drowes Fishery office…

The 2021 salmon fishing season is due to commence in less than a month. At time of writing, intercounty travel will be permitted from before Christmas to Wednesday January 6th. Activities to mark the commencement of the new season on January 1st will necessarily be more muted next year.

There will be no increase in either fishing permit or state salmon licence prices for the 2021 season. As announced earlier in the year, 2020 season permits will remain valid for the 2021 season as a gesture to anglers whose opportunity to fish was impacted during times of lockdown and travel restrictions.

The 2021 state salmon licence is available for purchase at Store.fishinginireland.info

Anglers are encouraged to purchase their licence online where possible and to allow at least 4 working days for salmon tags to be posted. Fishing permits will also be available online at www.drowessalmonfishery.com

Permits and licences will also be available from the fishing tackle shop at Lareen, which will be open from 8am from Tuesday 29th December and from 6am on New Year’s morning. Restrictions on entry to the shop will be in place. Face masks must be worn and social distancing observed.

Drowes prize
A bar of silver for a bar of silver

The fishery will once again be offering a prize of a one kilo “bar of silver” for the first fresh, wild salmon released from the fishery in 2021. Further details, terms and conditions will be announced before opening day.

Everyone at the fishery is very much looking forward to getting back on the water, meeting up with old friends and facing the first dawn of the new year with an optimistic cast.

River Drowes

The Drowes Fishery is one of Ireland’s premier spring salmon and grilse fisheries. The river is some 5 miles in length, with over 70 named pools, flowing from Lough Melvin at Lareen Bay and entering the sea at Tullaghan, just outside Bundoran. The Drowes has a wide variety of water suitable for all fishing methods, including several miles of good fly water and deeper slower moving pools suitable for spinning and bait fishing.
