Declan Gibbons reports on last week’s fishing on Lough Corrib
Angling pressure was relatively quiet due to heavy rainfall and high winds but some anglers did manage to get out in sheltered areas when the weather permitted. Fish that were caught were in notably good condition from reports from anglers. The weekend offered some slight respite, with Saturday providing just showers as relief from unremitting rain, and Sunday was a calm, drier day again.
On Sunday in the Oughterard area Gerry Molloy (www.loughcorriboughterard.com) and Joe Tierney enjoyed a good day’s fishing trolling the Bricin, landing 5 fish for 12.75lbs. Joe landed the best fish of 4lbs, and Gerry had two fish himself on Saturday for two hours fishing with the best being 2lbs. Also in the Oughterard area Kevin Molloy and Harold O’Toole had 2 fish on Monday last for their day, with the best being 2lbs.
In the Cornamona area Peter Walsh had 1fish for 3.25lbs on Sunday, trolling the Bricin.
John Somerville and Andrew Boyd landed 2 fish on Sunday on wet fly in the Headford area with the fish averaging 1.5lbs each and rose 2 more.
In the Cong area Mark Ryan caught a fish of 7lbs on the troll on Saturday, which he sportingly released. He was fishing with Robbie Conneely, and on Sunday the pair landed 3 fish with the best being 2lbs. Also in the Cong area Stephen Barry and Robert Molloy landed 2 fish on Saturday to 1.5lbs, and on Sunday landed 3 fish – best fish 2lbs.
Lough Corrib is now very high, with the lough backing up the lower Clare River and other tributaries, flooding large areas of bog and low-lying farmland. The forecast for the week ahead is for more unsettled weather, with blustery westerly winds, cold temperatures and frequent showers, some wintry. Thursday looks the best bet for a small weather window, and for any hardy anglers who venture out this week, stay safe and tight lines!
