It was a red letter day for Johnny Byrne from Killybegs recently, or perhaps silver is more appropriate. While out lure fishing for bass, he hooked into the fish of a lifetime. This monster sea trout promptly stripped the reel, giving a great fight before finally coming ashore. Measuring in at 70cm, and estimated by Johnny at 7-8lbs (we think more!) the sea trout is one of the most impressive fish we have seen in a while. Even better, the fish was swiftly released again after a quick photo. Johnny is one of the most prolific shore anglers we know, putting in many hours fishing and exploring new marks, and fish like this are a reward for all that hard work. Well done Johnny!

That followed hot on the heels of winning the top club angler prize in the latest Killybegs Mariners competition, held at Narin on Friday night. Johnny landed two good bass of 42 nd 50cm. Top prize on the night was taken by visiting angler (not eligible for club angler prize) John Marshall, with a catch of mackerel, weaver and flatfish. Second was another visiting angler, Marko De Kleer. The longest flatfish prize was shared by Gavin Dorrian and Daragh McGuinness with a 28cm flounder each.
