Salmon angling on the Blackwater picked up earlier this month on fisheries from Ballyduff, Co. Waterford to Cappoquin, Co. Waterford. Unfortunately, despite plenty of reports of large shoals of Salmon seen along many sections of the river other fisheries have not done as well. In the last few days the grilse run has hit the river and anglers in the lower half are again doing very well.

On 6th July, Fortwilliam’s anglers had great sport with 4 fish landed. Nick Ro landed 3 fish on fly on the Glenmore beat releasing 2 safely and hooking into the same amount with long distance C&R.

The Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery saw a 30cm rise in water levels on Wednesday 07 July. By 2pm they had 7 fish hooked and 4 landed on the Cable Island beat alone.

On the 8th they had another fantastic day on the fishery with a total of 11 fish hooked and 6 making it to the net. Angler of the day was Robert who landed 4 fish on the fly at Cable Island. Water was dropping slowly and the fish were running hard.

On Saturday all beats at Fortwilliam produced fish as there was another nice run of grilse. Anglers reported it was great the see fish entering the fishery even to watch them running by. Father and son team Paddy and Luke Mullins had a good day out landing 3 on fly and all released.

Blackwater Salmon and Trout fishery also had a great day on Saturday. Between Friday and Saturday they had 32 fish hooked with 19 making it to the net. There was fantastic fishing around and all beats produced fish. Most salmon were taken on light gear and small flies providing great fun for the anglers.

Glenda Powell was fishing her beats on Sunday and had lovely grilse, pictured here

Fish were also reported from Blackwater Salmon Fishery and Careysville on Sunday (yesterday). Although there are a lot of grilse running some bigger fish are also on the move. At Careysville one lucky angler had a right lump of a fish. One of the largest salmon on the fishery this season so far.

Sunday’s rain should see continued sport into this week.

Go fishing…

Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery

Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.
