Trout angling was not as productive as salmon angling in the Moy catchment! There are still some Mayfly present in small hatches in sheltered bays. A lot of the trout this week were caught on dry Mayflies and other Olive patterns. Over half the fish reported were caught in deeper water and a significant amount of weed has started to show in some shallow bays.
Johnny Warren from Crossmolina had a good 2 lbs. trout on a dry Bumble Olive in Pump House Bay or as it is officially known, “Kent’s Pool”. Eddie Coleman from Foxford had a 2 lbs. trout in the same bay on a dry Olive. They all reported a good few smaller fish released.
Peter Roche had a 1.75 lbs. trout in Gallaghers Bay to a dry Mayfly and just a few smaller trout to the boat, all released. Peter found that fish were not rising freely and had no action on wet flies.
At Brackwansha, a party of four from Wicklow organised by Brian Quinn had some fair fishing over three days. They had 11 keepers to the boat with a few smaller trout also, all released. The trout were mostly caught on dry Bumbles with two on a Green Peter. They stayed locally in Sandy Bay House, where Maura Gallagher looked after them and they commented “great rooms, but also an excellent cook”. Maura can be contacted on +353 m(0)86 0856187.
Murphy’s Boat Hire had 2 groups out angling from Counties Donegal and Clare. They fished all the bays in south Conn and between them they had approximately 16 trout to the boat, all released. Two anglers also brought in two small grilse while trolling along Victoria Point.
Stan Pitrzyk from Sligo had a lovely trout for just over 4 lbs. on a Stucki spoon in Tolan’s Bay, released again, and caught a 3.5 lbs. grilse trolling in the River Deel which was also released.
