Dan O’Neill was out on the Nore last weekend…

The slightly warmer and more humid days leading up to my fishing outings last weekend made for some great fishing. Trout were coming to wets, dry dropper and bubble head caddis.

My first trip was on the Nore to try out some new Klink patterns and perdigon nymphs. I have fished a small bit with perdigons in the past so wanted to re-visit and pick up where I left off. Picking some nice water at the tail end of one of the runs it was time to get started. It wasn’t long before that unmistakable buttery gold flash under my klink indicated I was into my first trout. A beautiful brown trout began leaping, bringing me around in a semi circle till I was facing downstream. I soon had him at the net, a fish of about 30cm. It was a lovely start with a few small to medium fish following.

As the morning progressed trout were sipping and jumping for joy along the medium to slow water so I decided to give wet flies a chance. I had quite a few nice trout showing the usual acrobatics which we never get sick of seeing. Water temps have been hitting 16C and above the past few days, water level is coming down nicely also.

My final hours were spend with a bubble head caddis. I got some very explosive takes which is a joy to watch.I had some lovely trout with a couple touching the 30cm mark , few larger fish beginning to show.

Overall a great weekend and hoping for plenty more trout during the week.
